The bi-monthly bill for common service connections for the residents belonging to small apartments in Chennai have increased by more than 1500 times now.

It was brought to light by a resident belonging to an apartment in Kolathur that for consuming 140 units for common lighting and water pump etc normally the bill would be Rs 80 but this time the bill was Rs 1320. He threw light on how the electricity bill for common service had gone up by 1550 times now. For the 2 months, Tangedco has charged Rs 8 per unit and a fixed charge of Rs 200. The residents feel the amount charged was very high.

Normally, the apartment`s bi-monthly consumption would vary from 80 units to 220 units and the highest amount paid was about Rs 300. From 10th September, tariff has been revised and Tangedco created a new tariff category of 1-D for the common services in the apartments and group houses for common lighting, lifts, water supply, gym, swimming pools and sewerage treatment etc.

Information is that under the Low Tension 1-D tariff the consumer would be charged Rs 8 per unit and Rs 100 per kilowatt per month as fixed charges.

It is noteworthy that under the previous tariff common services like lighting, lifts and water supply etc came under the subsidised tariff while gym, swimming pools etc came under the commercial tariff. The consumers have been getting bi-monthly bills under the revised tariffs for full usage from 10th November onwards.

Many consumers expressed her unhappiness regarding the increased tariff on the social media platforms. As per one consumer apartment common EB rate was higher than the commercial energy charges. He mentioned that the Tangedoc was charging Rs 8 per unit and fixed charges of Rs 400 to Rs 600.

The tariff for the common services is now too high and Tangedco must roll back the tariffs. This was according to Mr. Purushothaman, secretary, Federation of Adayalampattu Residents Welfare Association. He spoke about how it was not fair to charge a part of the domestic consumer living in an apartment with higher tariff for domestic usage.
