In the middle of the next week, Chennai is likely to receive the next round of monsoon rains. This would be mainly due to the effect of a system that is developing now near Sri Lanka. Later on, it could become a cyclone or a depression.

Till the morning of Friday, Nungambakkam received 7cms of rain and Tondiarpet received the highest of 17cm of rain in Chennai. Now , the first round of rain has started to reduce in the city and the rain is becoming scattered. For one more day, Chennai and its suburbs might get heavy rains.

As per the forecast made by the Meteorological Dept, Chennai city would receive moderate to heavy rains with lightning and thunderstorms for the next 2 days. Information collected is that the rains could be due to the impact of an east west trough running across TN in the lower tropospheric levels.

The easterlies have been moving into the interior parts of TN with a monsoon trough with multiple circulations present in south TN. As a result, there could be more rain in the interior places but not in Chennai city. This was pointed out by some private weather bloggers.

The rain spell has been weakening and moving to the interior areas, there could be heavy rains for the next 2 days and this was forecasted by the Met Dept. On Thursday night, Cvhennai received good rains but it was bright and sunny on Friday. Different parts of the Chennai city received short intense rains in the evening as the rain clouds moved.
