It is not often Tamil Nadu receives rains in the month of March. Point is that in the last 150 years the state received rains only a few times in March.

The sensational piece of information is that a rare weather system brewing over Bay of Bengal would be bringing heavy rains in some parts of TN from 3rd of March. Mr. Pradeep john, weather blogger mentioned that in the last 150 years TN received rains in March just twice and that was in the years 1984, 2008. This rare rain in TN would be due to the Equatorial Rossby Wave and the days to watch out would be between 3rd March and 6th March.

On 3rd and 4th March, the meteorological department had issued warnings to many districts about heavy rains. Information collected is that at the isolated places belonging to the districts like Ramanathapuram, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai and Cuddalore on 3rd March heavy to very heavy rains would occur. There would be heavy rains in districts like Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Perambalur and Sivaganga etc. From 4th of March, Chennai and the neighbouring districts might get rains. To various districts like Cuddalore, Villupuram, Chengalpet, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Vellore, Thirupathur, Tiruvannamalai and Kakkakurichi etc, a warning has been given regarding rains.

A low pressure area was formed over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining area of south Andaman Sea and Equatorial Indian Ocean. This low pressure would become well marked and likely to move west north- west wards towards Sri Lanka coast in the next 3 days.
