The weather experts have confirmed that the state of Tamil Nadu has been witnessing extreme rainfalls as well as drought in the past 2 decades. Truth is that this extreme rain and drought is a natural process and TN has been dependent on the seasonal rainfall.

Not many would have forgotten that in the years 2015 and 2021 TN recorded the highest amount of rainfall annually against the normal. It is said that the weather change is a natural process and it cannot be predicted. In the past 2 decades from 2000 to 2021, Chennai as well as Tamil Nadu witnessed heavy rains plus drought.

According to Mr. S. Balachandran of RMC Chennai it was clear that 2005 had very heavy rainfall over 53percent than normal and 2016 had very less rains or minus 6percent. In 2015, TN recorded the highest amount of rain of 1379mm and in 2015 TN received 1214mm of rain.

Normal rainfall was recorded for 10 years in TN from 2000 to 2021 in the NE monsoon season and 13 years when the annual rainfall was taken into consideration. It is learnt that for 6 years TN received excess rainfall and in one year TN had large excess rains especially in the monsoon season. In Chennai for 12 years from 2000 to 2020 Chennai recorded normal rains annually. Both annually and seasonally, excess rainfall was received and 3 years with large excess rainfall in the NE monsoon season. Point is that one year had a large excess of annual rainfall.
