We are now in the best time of the year!! Yes, winter season!!

It is the time of the year when the majority of the people feel happy because of the pleasant climate with fresh air, no humidity, no sweating, availability of various foods and holidays etc. There are some who might feel this cold weather is not to their liking. Point is that those with high blood sugar levels or diabetes might find it tough in this cold weather. Changing seasons would affect the blood sugar levels in a person. Body’s ability to produce and use insulin would get affected in the extreme weather conditions. In the winter season, foods that would keep us warm would be given more importance by us. Those with diabetes must not eat every food they come across and they would have to select certain foods that would help them to manage their diabetes condition.

Sweet potatoes consumption:

Potatoes consumption could lead to higher fluctuations in the blood sugar levels whereas sweet potatoes with low glycemic index would cause fewer fluctuations in the blood sugar levels. Breakdown of sweet potatoes would take place slowly in the body. Intake of the fiber rich sweet potatoes in the winter season could aid in weight reduction and finally in managing the blood sugar levels effectively.

Mustard leaves consumption:

Low in calories and low in glycemic index, mustard are superb foods in the winters for those with diabetes. The mustard leaves are also rich in phytonutrients and vitamins like C, K and calcium etc. It is believed that just one serving could provide the necessary nutrients. The mustard leaves could either be added to salads, smoothies or to soups etc

Beetroot consumption:

People with diabetes could benefit in the winters by eating beetroot. It is known that beetroot is rich in fiber plus in many minerals like manganese, potassium, iron etc. The presence of alpha- lipoic acid in beetroot does superbly in lowering the blood sugar levels plus it increases insulin sensitivity and reduces oxidative stress etc. Beetroot can be consumed as soups, salads etc.
