There are times in our lives when we wake up in the morning and stand before the mirror and see our eyes swollen or puffy. Build up of fluid around the eyes could result in puffiness of the eyes. Truth is that the thin skin around the eyelid could cause retention of fluid and this makes our eyes look puffy.

Various reasons for the eye swelling or puffiness are

Lack of sleep:

This could be one important cause for the eyes to become puffy. It must be noted that when we don’t sleep well then the blood vessels around the eyes could dilate leaking fluid that gets built up under the skin around the eyelid. It is well known to us that sleep is very essential for us and by sleeping well we could avoid many other health issues also.

Allergies:

Many of us are allergic to certain substances and when we come in contact with these then our body would release histamines. Point is that histamines would dilate the blood vessels and by this fluid would get leaked out leading to swelling. This could be overcome by taking antihistamines or by avoiding substances that could lead to allergy.

Crying:

The area around the eyes would get more blood flow when we cry. This might put stress on the blood vessels and could result in leakage. The excess fluid present underneath the skin could lead to puffiness. By applying a cold compress to the eyes, this issue of swollen eyes could be reduced.

More sodium intake:

Consuming more sodium than needed could lead to the body retaining more water than usual. The eyes would appear bloated. This could be overcome by tracking the amount of sodium consumed, limiting the intake of foods rich in sodium etc.

Dehydration:

Drinking lots of water every day is essential and there are many benefits due to this. Dehydration could result in many issues as sodium becomes more concentrated and it would lead to accumulation of fluids around the eyes. This would make the eyes look swollen. This issue of dehydration could be overcome by drinking enough water.

Ageing:

It is worthy to mention that the skin would have less collagen and elastin as we grow older or age leading to less firmness of the skin. The tissue begins to sag and ligaments around eyes become thinned etc leading to puffy bags around the eyes. Procedures like dermal filling, laser resurfacing etc could be used to overcome this issue.
