The day on which the north east monsoons would set over Tamil Nadu in this year is likely on 26th October. On that day, the north easterly winds would be setting at the lower tropospheric levels over Bay of Bengal. This would result in the parallel retreat of SW monsoon and the beginning of the NE monsoon in the southern peninsular region.

Mr. S. Balachandran, DDG of Meteorology was of the view that the prolonged SW monsoons has led to the delay in the NE monsoon this time. Normally, NE monsoon would set around 20th of October itself. He hinted that IMD has been keeping an eye on the weather pattern changes.  Till 24th October in TN, IMD has already predicted widespread rains are known.

Information gathered is that a cyclonic circulation over TN plus a trough extending from the weather system to northern parts would be responsible for the isolated intense rains in south and in the Western Ghats. In one or in two places in Trichy, Namakkal, Salem, Kallakurichi etc, there would be heavy to very heavy rainfall. On Thursday, the coastal regions are likely to get light to moderate rains.

Till this coming weekend, many parts belonging to TN and Puducherry would continue to get rains of different intensities.  Humid weather in Chennai is due to the increase in the moisture in the winds.

There would be thunderstorms with rains in some places in Chennai till Friday. It is now said that the maximum temperatures would remain 3 degrees above the normal at 35 degrees Celsius.
