Previous record for the number of COVID cases in a single day broken in Chennai - GCC is now ramping up the containment efforts

Highest single day spike of fresh Covid-19 cases was recorded yesterday in Chennai and it made many heads turn!!
It must be noted that Chennai had as many as 2482 fresh cases and this was the highest ever since the pandemic began in 2020. This has made GCC to revamp Covid-19 control efforts now.
The cumulative Covid-19 cases reached 269614 and the number of active Covid-19 cases is18673 now. In the month of June 2020, Chennai reported the previous highest single day Covid-19 positive cases and it was 3393. Now, fever surveillance and contact tracing have been ramped up by the Chennai Corporation as the number of Coronavirus positive cases are increasing in Chennai.
In Chennai, as many as 1119 streets have Coronavirus positive cases now and Teynampet zone has got 212 streets with Coronavirus positive cases. In the Royapuram zone, as many as 167 streets have got Coronavirus positive cases.
It was stated by a senior officer belonging to GCC that the civic body treats streets or houses with 3 or more index cases or with 2 or more affected families as containment zones. Information is that unlike in the past watertight containment with strict movement of public on the streets is not followed. He mentioned that containment is now restricted with the house level only.
The surveillance staff have been going door-to-door in Chennai to check for the Coronavirus symptom and to collect details of residents who meet the vaccination criteria. Since the month of May in 2020, GCC has been conducting fever camps are well known to us. The total number of fever camps that has been held till Tuesday was 3129. On Tuesday itself, as many as 329 fever camps were conducted and as many as 20,713 persons attended these camps. Point is that 367 Covid-19 symptomatic cases were identified in these fever camps.
