Any chance there for easing restrictions in the hostels in Tamil Nadu?

Posted on : 22/Feb/2021 9:15:13 AM

Most educational institutions in TN have been given permission to reopen and there is demand now to ease out hostel restrictions. It is well known that the hostel rooms would not be allowed to share by the students and this was as per the regulations of Centre and state government.

The students belonging to various engineering colleges are facing a huge issue now. They have been asked by the college management to search for a place outside the college premises. It must be noted that there are few engineering colleges in TN that have not yet reopened also.

Various civil service aspirants are facing the issue of not having a proper place to stay now. The aspirants have been accepted for training in the TN government based All India Civil services Coaching Centre but rooms were not provided to many aspirants due to restrictions.

An aspirant expressed his feelings about not being provided with a hostel room. He spoke about how he was selected as he had cleared the entrance exam for the coaching centre that was conducted on 24th January 2021. He explained about how his name was released in the non-residential list though he had applied for a hostel. He concluded that it was not possible for him to pay an amount of Rs 10,000 per month if he had to stay outside.

It was later bought out by another aspirant from Kallakuruchi that he too had the same issue. It is important to note that the coaching centre had mentioned that all students who have opted Chennai as their exam centre for the entrance examination would not be provided hostel rooms. Truth is lesser students were taken into the hostels this year. The colleges might not permit the students to share the hostel rooms and this was according to the recent guidelines issued by UGC. Point is this would apply even under the SOP issued by the government of TN.

The lack of availability of hostel rooms (due to the restrictions) for the students was the main reason behind why many engineering colleges havent yet opened all classes. This was according to Mr. R.M, Kishore, vice-chairman, RMK Group of Institutions. The demand for the hostel rooms is more now than it was in the past (before Covid-19) because the parents have been reluctant in allowing their kids to stay outside the campus.  He threw light on how many colleges have opted for a shift based system to abide by regulations.

As per Mr. Sai Prakash Leo Muthu, CEO, Sairam institutions, Chennai, the Covid situation had improved and it would be good if the regulations were relaxed in TN. He added that green signal from the TN government to reopen hostels is awaited now.
