Around 19th January, NE monsoon to withdraw from TN, rains to reduce afterwards

This month of January has been unique regarding rains. Never before, Chennai received so much rain in January and this has caught the attention of many. The news now is around 19th January the NE monsoons would withdraw from Tamil Nadu. On Saturday, there would be moderate rains in few places in southern parts of TN and the rains might decrease from Sunday onwards. This has been pointed out by the meteorological department.

Many places received light to moderate rains in the last 24 hours ending at 8:30 am. Heavy rains were recorded in some weather stations also. Day’s highest amount of rainfall of 9mm each was received in Nagapattinam and Echanviduthi in Thanjavur district.

There would be rains on Saturday and it would be due to the cyclonic circulation over southwest Bay of Bengal. It is said that from Sunday onwards the monsoon activity would start easing. It is known that torrential rains poured in TN due to the monsoon activity. From Monday, there might be dry weather over the state of TN. The meteorological department revealed that in the past there were few times when NE monsoon spilled over January. The monsoons have extended this year due to LA Nina conditions over the Pacific Ocean. The state of TN had got a monthly rainfall of 13.3cm till now and this was also because of the rains that pounded several parts of TN yesterday.

Usually, there would be 11.4mm rains in the month of January and excess of 10725 rains were received this time. Chennai district alone had received 19.4 cm rains in January and that was in excess of the average of 17mm rains in January. Chennai would have partly cloudy sky and there would be mist in the early mornings in the weekend. Chennai would have a maximum temperature of around 30 degrees Celsius.
