Herculean task ahead for the TN schools in preparing students for board examinations

The schools in TN are now getting ready for reopening after the Pongal holidays.

At this point of time, the government and government aided schools would be having tough tasks ahead in preparing the students for the board exams. Truth is that these government and government aided schools did not conduct online classes for the students unlike the private schools. The academicians are worried about this lack of preparation plus the strict compliance of SOPs in the schools.

In TN, there are more than 17lakhs students in classes 10 and 12 out of which 8lakhs are enrolled in the government and government aided schools.

The Secretary, State Platform for Common School System- Tamil Nadu or SPCSS-TN, Mr. P.B. Prince Gajendra Babu pointed out that not many students belonging to poor families could afford safety face masks as per the guidelines from the department of health. He was unsure about the schools following SOP every day. It must be taken into account that schools are reopening just to prepare the students for the board examinations. He added that the TN government must provide information regarding class hours, number of working days, dates for the board exams etc.

It was brought to light by Mr. S. Arumainathan, president TN Students Parents Welfare Association that most of the government schools in rural places in TN lack proper infrastructure facilities such as toilet facilities for the students etc.

He explained that the vaccines have come out and the government could have waited for one more month so that the students could be vaccinated before returning to the schools. It was mentioned by Mr. P.K. Illamaran, president of TN Teachers Association that for the safety of the students the government must distribute free reusable masks for the poor students. The authorities concerned must immediately announce reduction of the syllabus and by that the teachers would have sufficient time to help the students to prepare for the board examinations. A senior officer belonging to the school education department assured that before the classes begin sanitisation and other safety measures like distribution of thermal scanners and hand sanitizers to TN schools would be completed.

The decision of the TN government to reopen the schools for classes 10 and 12 was appreciated by the private school managements. It was later highlighted by Mr. D. C. Elangovan, secretary, Federation of Associations of Private Schools that it was their demand for long for reopening of schools.
