In the forthcoming years, to prevent drought and flood situations in Chennai, the Public works Department or PWD has chalked out more than 10 projects. Truth is that the PWD has submitted a DPR or detailed project report seeking World Bank funds under the Chennai City Partnership Programme. The project would cover Adyar, Cooum and Kosasthalaiyar river basins and would be of Rs 464 crores.

For the purpose of storing surplus water from the Chembarambakkam Lake in a nearby stone quarry, a check dam would be built. At the rate of 50 cusecs, the excess water from the lake enters the quarry pit in Sikkarayapuram. Information is that during heavy rains more water more water could be discharged as it has got a storage capacity of 500 mcft. Now, just one fifth of this gets utilised is known.

It has been revealed that the government has proposed to construct a check dam for more out flow at Kavanur village and a 3.8km long channel with capacity of 500 cusecs of water. For better discharge of water, an amount of Rs 66 crores has been sanctioned to widen Adyar River till 120m. For this, around 25acres of land would be needed.

Various strategies planned:

It is worthy to note that other strategies would include intra-basin transfer, construction of barrages or riverine reservoirs, improving storage capacity of tanks etc. It has been pointed out by an official that there would be retrieval of check dams in Kosasthalaiyar and Cooum basins. There would be enhancement in the ground water potential and it would save about 180 MLD water.
