Cyclone Puravi intensifies!

The depression zone formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal has intensified rapidly and transformed into a severe depression zone. This is set to transform into a cyclone today (Tuesday, 1st December. As per the name given by the country Maldives, this cyclone is named ‘Puravi’.

The Director of the Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre, N. Puviyarsan shared on Monday (30th November):

The cyclone Puravi, expected to be formed on Tuesday (today, 1st December)will cause the prospects for medium rains in Tamil |Nadu, Puducherry, and |Karaikkal and prospects for heavy to very heavy rains in the southern districts from Tuesday (2nd December) to Thursday (4th December) for 3 days. As regards the |Chennai Metro City and its suburbs, the sky will remain somewhat cloudy on 1st December (Tuesday, today). There are prospects for mild to medium rains in some parts of the city.

Places where there are prospects for heavy rains:

1st December: There are prospects for heavy rains in the districts of Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagappattinam, Pudhukkottai, Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram, Thirunelveli, Thoothukkudi, and Kanyakumari. For the other districts, Puducherry, and Karaikkal, there are prospects for mild to medium rain.

2nd December: There are prospects for very heavy rains with thunder in 1 or 2 places in the districts of Thenkasi, Ramanathapuram, Thirunelveli, Thoothukkudi, and Kanyakumari. There are prospects for very heavy rains in 1 or 2 places in the districts of Pudhukkottai, Sivagangai, Virudhunagar, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagappattinam, and Karaikkal. There are prospects for heavy rains in the districts of Thiruvallur and Kanchipuram.

3rd December: There are prospects for very heavy rains in the districts of Thenkasi, Thirunelveli, Thoothukkudi, and Kanyakumari. There are prospects for very heavy rains in the districts of Sivagangai, Virudhunagar, and Ramanathapuram and prospects for mild rain in the coastal districts and Puducherry, and Karaikkal. There are prospects for mild to medium rain in the interior districts.

4th December: There are prospects for mild rains in a few places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikkal.

Warning for fishermen: Over the southeast Bay of Bengal, Bay of Mannar, Kanyakumari Ocean, and |Tamil Nadu |Coastal Areas, South Andaman Sea, southeast Arabian Sea, Kerala Coastal areas, Lakhdivs and Maldiv areas, high-speed cyclonic winds at 60 kmph to 70 kmph and at times, even at 80 kmph are likely to blow. Hence, it is warned that the fishermen MUST NOT VENTURE INTO THE SEA UNTIL 3RD DECEMBER! Further, fishermen should not venture into the sea in the region central of the South Bay of Bengal on 4th December!
