The Director of the Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre, Balachandran, shared with the press:

“Even after crossing the coast, the recent cyclone Nivar, in a weakened condition, prevailed over the northwest direction. Presently, in a weakened condition as a low-pressure zone, it is situated over the South Andhra Central-west Bay of Bengal.

Due to this, there were widespread rains in the last 24 hours in many districts, including Ranippettai, Krishnagiri, and Thirupathur. There were heavy to very heavy rains in a few places.

In the last 24 hours, a maximum rainfall of 23 cm has been recorded in Chozhinagar, Ranippettai District.

As regards the next 2 days, there are prospects for mild to medium rains in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

As at the present situation, there are prospects of a new low-pressure zone to be formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal. This may intensify to transform into a strong depression zone and drift towards the Tamil Nadu coastal areas. Hence, there are prospects for widespread rains in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry for 3 days from 1st December to 3rd December.

As regards the northeast monsoon seasonal rains, the average rains recorded should be 34 cm. However, the rainfall so far has been only 29%. This is lesser by 15% as compared to the average expected rainfall.”
