Less number of passengers in the Chennai metro trains now

Posted on: 08/Sep/2020 9:02:03 AM
The metro trains have begun their operations in the Chennai city from 7th September and only a few commuters travelled in these trains. It must be noted that the metro trains operated on one of the two phase-1 corridors from Washermanpet to the airport amid strict restrictions.

Last time, when these metro trains operated in full flow was more than 5 months back. The metro train operations were suspended due to the lockdown to contain the spread of Covid-19 infection.

Those commuters who wore face masks were only allowed inside the metro stations and the commuters were checked for their body temperatures and were asked to sanitise their hands at the entrance. On 9th September, operations of metro trains on other corridors from Central Metro to St Thomas Mount would start.

It must not be forgotten that on Monday, 7th September Chennai city was one among few others that have resumed metro train services in India since the nationwide lockdown in March.

In Chennai, metro trains were operated from 7am till 8pm with a frequency of 5 minutes in the peak hours and 10 minute frequency in the non-peak hours. Metro trains were near empty yesterday and the commuters showed a lukewarm response.

Working from home and non-opening of the educational institutions were cited as the reasons behind the low patronage in the metro trains in Chennai. This was according to some officials of the CMRL.

An Alandur resident spoke about how the resumption of metro trains was superb for her as she would be able to go to her office in Broadway much easier now.

She threw light on how she was travelling to her office by autos till now and how she had to spend a lot of money for the travel. Important information is CMRL’s pre-Covid daily average footfall was around 1.16 lakhs against an estimated 7.76 lakhs.
