The social distancing norms have been violated by many commercial establishments in Chennai and this has increased the number of Covid-19 cases.

On Friday, 4th September, GCC sealed many commercial establishments for the above said reason. It is now said that this sealing of many commercial establishments has come at a time when Chennai has opened up completely as resumption of MTC bus services has started already and there would be resumption of metro trains also soon.

It was mentioned by a statement from the GCC that as a part of intense drive against the shops and also against those persons who have violated Covid-19 containment norms, the Corporation imposed penalty on 600 persons for not wearing facemasks.

On a single day, overall Rs 2.45 lakhs have been collected as a fine amount. Till 3rd September, the Chennai Corporation had collected an amount of Rs 1.85lakhs for violating norms is well known.

To ensure workers wore face masks at the construction sites, Mr. Harmender Singh, secretary of Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department gave instructions to the field engineers of Chennai Corporation to inspect the construction sites.

Warning was also issued by him regarding GCC that would continue to impose penalties on those who refuse to wear facemasks and on those shops failing to maintain social distancing.

Mr. Harmender Singh then mentioned how the Chennai Corporation must identify the old age homes and focus on those places to prevent the spread of Coronavirus infection. He concluded that awareness about social distancing must be made by GCC by the erection of the advertisement banners.
