Free dialysis centres managed by TANKER to be set up in 15 zones of GCC

Cost and travel create lots of issues for those undergoing dialysis in Chennai.
Many persons having kidney issues undergo dialysis and this procedure is expensive. In addition to this, people who undergo dialysis have to travel to or from a hospital or a dialysis centre and this is cumbersome. This piece of news would make many kidney patients happy now.
It is now revealed that GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation is planning for a free dialysis centre in each of the 15 zones. It would be a public-private partnership and the space for the free dialysis centre plus electricity costs would be provided by the Chennai Corporation.
The dialysis centre would be managed by TN Kidney research Foundation or TANKER. Voluntary organisations like Rotary club would be playing their part in the purchase of equipment.
It is important to note that at present dialysis centres are present in just 5 GCC zones and there are 70 machines. Before the end of 2020, GCC would be starting free dialysis centres in places like Tiruvottiyur zone, Ambattur zone and Tondiarpet zone.
This was highlighted by Mr Madhusudhan Reddy, JC (Health). He explained that 15% of all dialysis patients would be catered by these centres. Those from the economically poor background could now feel relieved and happy.
The Chief Minister’s health insurance scheme would be paying for the dialysis procedure of the patients and it is a zero-cost scheme. It is known that every dialysis session at the private hospitals costs Rs 1500 to Rs 3500 and with 2 sittings per week it could cause financial issues for the patient.
Chronic kidney disease is present in 17% of the people in India and every year 200 per every million of the population gets added. This was according to Dr George Abraham, a veteran nephrologist and the founder trustee of TANKER.
