It must be taken into account that 21.3% of the population in this zone fall into the most vulnerable category. Many persons in this Teynampet zone have got co-morbid conditions like hypertension, diabetes etc and it is well known that those with these issues are more prone to get Coronavirus infection than compared to others. A Vulnerable and High Risk Population survey has been carried out and nearly 61.73 lakhs people in all the 15 zones have been surveyed by the GCC. It was revealed that in the Teynampet zone there are as many as 97,636 senior citizens or those above the age of 60 and as many as20040 have diabetes issues. Truth here is other zones that had similar numbers of senior citizens and with co-morbid conditions did not have high fatalities like theTeynampet zone.

As per an official belonging to Teynampet zone, even amongst those in the 60 plus bracket the zone has got a high population aged between 80 to 90 years..He added that this factor must also be considered. .

In the Alandur zone that has the second highest senior citizen population, there are 38144 persons in the senior citizens category and of these 21.6% have co-morbid conditions in them. Here, the fatality rate stood at 1.39 percent.

In the Kodambakkam zone, 15.5percent of the population is above the age of 60 and 20.45 percent has got co-morbid conditions in them. The fatality rate here is 1.94%. The point is Tiruvottriyur zone has the second highest fatality rate and is 2.91% but this zone has a lower percentage of persons above 60.
