Persons with flu-like symptoms have increased four times in Chennai during Lockdown

On Friday, the Chennai Corporation commissioner Mr G. Prakash made many heads turn when he said that there was a fourfold jump in the number of people detected with flu-like symptoms in this present lockdown in Chennai. He spoke about how 90 percent of people were at homes.

In the past, in the door-to-door surveys conducted by GCC, 600 to 700 persons with flu-like symptoms were detected. Now, the number has increased to 3000 per day. There are many who come to the fever camps with flu-like symptoms and they were sent for a Coronavirus test based on the doctors advice.

Every day, in Chennai, around 10,000 samples are being tested for Coronavirus infection. Around 5000 samples are being collected every day by the corporation run centres now. Earlier, it was just around 1500.  It is well known that Anna University or AU in Guindy has been readied as COVID care centre and the corporation would add another 1500 beds in AU to CCC or COVID Care Centre.

It was revealed by Mr G. Prakash that the new beds added would be in 4 locations in this AU and it would be ready in another 5 to 6 days of time. Point is professors belonging to MMC, Chennai would take it over. Across 54 institutions in Chennai city, GCC has created as many as 17.500 beds. There is adequate infrastructure now as just4350 beds have been occupied by the patients.

No incidence of blast or spurt was reported in the last 45 days in Chennai and the GCC has brought out strong strategies to deal with the Covid-19 cases in slum areas in Chennai. Around 26 to 28 lakh people in the slums have been targeted by the community intervention programme is known.
