A rare event that occurs only once in 10 years, the solar eclipse occurring tomorrow (Sunday, 21st June), when a fire-ring can be seen in some cities in the state of Tamil Nadu.

Experts have advised that THE PUBLIC SHOULD NOT VENTURE TO SEE THE ECLIPSE WITH NAKED EYES!

The shadow of the moon falls on the Sun covering it with only a fire-ring to be visible! A very rare sight/event indeed!  As such, because of the fire-ring, this eclipse has come to be known as ‘Kangana Grhanam’ (Kanganam means a ring/bracelet worn on the wrist) or a ‘Fire-ring Solar Eclipse’!

This occurs after a gap of 10 years and will be from IST 9.15 AM to afternoon 2.30 PM for a period of 5 hours and 15 minutes on Sunday, 21st June and the rare event can be seen.

In North India, the full fire-ring can be seen whereas n South India, only a part of the fire-ring can be seen - in some cities in Tamil Nadu state.

The expert astronomers have explained that solar eclipse can be seen to the extent of 34% in the Chennai Metro City. They have also explained how the solar eclipse can be seen.

Take a pad or a thick paper and make a hole in the center. And see the fire-ring through this! This hole made can be in any shape - a circle, a square, a rectangle, a rhombus, etc.

Keep this holed sheet/pad over the head so that a shadow falls on the head/face - an eclipse can be seen. Experts have specified that this fire-ring solar eclipse can be seen in countries located in central Africa, Saudi Arabia, and South China. At the same time, THE EXPERTS HAVE WARNED NOT TO SEE IT WITH NAKED EYE.

It is usual, at times of eclipses, to make special arrangements in the Chennai Birla Planetarium to facilitate the public to see. However, as the 100% lockdown is in imposition presently as a preventive measure to check the spread of the raging coronavirus pandemic, the experts have advised the public to see the solar eclipse from their respective residences only!

The fire-ring in full shape can be seen in the Indian States of Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttarkhand, and Haryana - up to the extent of 98.6%.

The next solar eclipse will occur on 14th December can be seen in India.  However, the next fire-ring solar eclipse is scheduled to occur only on 21st May 2031!
