Chennai receives Krishna water, open canal from Poondi reservoir turns to picnic place now

Summer has been tough and people have been finding various ways to cool down in this summer season. The people have now got a reason to rejoice.

It is now said that an open canal from Poondi reservoir in Tiruvallur district to Chembarambakkam is overflowing with Krishna water. This had turned into Chennai city’s favourite getaway for cooling off.

For the last 9 days, Poondi reservoir has been receiving Krishna water from AP at the rate of 3150 cusecs. It must be noted that the PWD authorities have been releasing the water into Chembarambakkam reservoir at the rate of 300 cusecs. 

Against the total capacity of 3645 mcft, Chembarambakkam reservoir now has a capacity of 2111 mcft. Truth is the 25 km long open canal that has been taking water to Chembarambakkam has become a picnic spot for the residents belonging to Sriperumbudur.

It has been warned by an official belonging to MWD that in some places along the stretch the canal is deep. Those who do not know swimming must avoid bathing in the stretch. From Chembarambakkam reservoir, 70 million litres of water gets drawn at present and this along with the 180 million litres of water from Veeranam Lake is being supplied to various parts belonging to Chennai city.

It is worthy to note that residents belonging to places like Valluvarkottam, Choolaimedu, Ramapuram, Valasarawakkam, Manapakkam, K.K. Nagar and those in suburbs such as Alandur, Pallipattu near Taramani plus in certain places of south Chennai would be benefited by water supply.
