Ban on Girivalam on Pournami: Online Darshan of Lord Arunchaleswarar!

Posted on: 07/May/2020 11:03:58 AM
Lakhs of devotees undertake ‘Girivalam’ (A trip around the bottom of the mountain Thiruvannamalai, where Lord Siva has taken the mountain form) especially on the Full Moon Day.

Among all the Full Moon Days in the Hindu/Tamil Calendar year, the Full Moon Days during the Tamil calendar months of Karthigai (Celebrated grandly as ‘Karthigai Deepam’ in Thiruvannamalai) and the month of Chithirai are traditionally considered even more sacred when the crowd of  devotees who undertake ‘girivalam’ is much larger!

The Full Moon Day falling on the Tamil calendar month of Chithirai, is known famously and celebrated as ‘Chithra Pournami.’, falls this Tamil Year ‘Saarvari’ today (Thursday, 7th May) starting at 7.28 PM the previous day (6th May) and concluding at 5.14 PM today (7th May).

However, the district administration has banned the devotees from undertaking girivalam as a preventive measure against the spreading of the coronavirus. Hence the entire temple complex, the girivalam route and the city’s roads and streets wore a deserted look!

The temple ceremonies scheduled to be organised as usual for Chithra Pournami will be performed and the devotees have the online facility to watch the same and pray as it is being telecast at the website of the Lors Sri Arunachaleswarara temple at Thiruvannamalai.
