Caused by poliovirus, polio is an infectious disease and in 0.5 % of cases, there would be weakening of muscles leading to inability to move. Hence, it is important to give oral polio vaccine to the children to prevent them from getting affected by polio.

On Sunday, oral polio vaccination drive was launched by the chief minister of TN, Dr E. Palaniswami and around 66.41 lakhs children or 94.2 percent were covered in this drive. This drive also saw the presence of health minister Mr C. Vijayabaskar and health secretary Beela Rajesh.

At his residence in Chennai, the chief minister administered the polio vaccine to a few children and urged parents to get kids below 5 years vaccinated. It is superb to mention that TN has been polio-free for the last 16 years and the government is taking efforts to administer polio drops to prevent the virus from attacking children.

For the sake of administering polio drops, the health department had deployed 2 lakh persons and immunization would be provided at 43,051 centres. For those living in remote and difficult areas, 1000 mobile health teams have fanned out and by this, all children would be vaccinated against polio. At the bus as well as in the train stations, as many as 1,652 transit booths have been set up.

To cover the remaining children, door-to-door campaigning would be done on Monday and Tuesday. This was according to Mr K. Kolandaisamy, DPH. He concluded that PHCs and government hospitals would administer polio vaccine till 25th of January
