Physical education plays an important role in the life of a student is well known. Physical education teachers are regarded highly now in many schools. The news that has come out now is these physical education teachers or PETs would soon have an added responsibility.

The information collected is these PETs have been given the work of handling the traffic outside the school premises once the classes get over. It was mentioned by the school education department in a circular that after the classes gets over there is a rush outside the school premises.

The circular noted that the students in an attempt to catch buses to reach their homes tend to travel on the foot boards and cling on the windows of the buses. It is brought out that to avoid this from happening the director of school education has asked the headmasters to disperse the students in groups at a gap of 15 minutes.

The circular added that the PETs should regulate the students and make sure that the school kids leave their school premises safely. Point is some schools already do this for the safety of their students and it has become official just now. Those students who arrive at their schools by the 2 wheelers would not be allowed inside the schools.

School education minister, Mr. Sengottaiyan spoke about how advisory was only given regarding parking space. He added that checking the status of the driving licences was not their work but it was the work of the transport department. The headmasters and teachers have been given instructions to wear helmets so that they would act as role model for the students.

To coordinate the activities of local road safety clubs, the district level school education department authorities have also been told to nominate one teacher from each school. It is said that strict action would be taken against those vehicles that carry excess of school children and this was as per the transport department.

It was later mentioned by an official release that the fines would be collected from violating vehicles plus permits of these vehicles would be suspended temporarily. This would be carried out when the vehicles do not have the speed governors fit while arriving at the RTOs for renewing their FCs. The release added that the same rule would apply to the transport vehicles (commercial category vehicles fitted with yellow boards) and fine amount would be in the range of Rs 100 to Rs 9000(for buses).
