Rains in Chennai Metro to persist for 3 more days!

The Chennai residents, long-starved with acute drinking water shortage and eagerly awaiting for a welcome break will be relieved greatly with this news!

At long last, the Chennai Metro City experienced welcome showers with thunder yesterday (Sunday, 21st July).

As per the weather predictions, as very welcome news for the city, Chennai is likely to receive rainfall for three more days after the rainfall yesterday!

This welcome news is mainly due to the cyclonic circulation over south coastal Tamil Nadu and neighbourhood which persists at 5.8 km above mean sea level.

The Regional Meteorological Centres forecast for Monday and Tuesday mentions:

The sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy. Light rain is likely to occur in some areas. Maximum and Minimum temperatures are likely to be around 36 and 27 deg Celsius respectively.

There are prospects of heavy rain at isolated places over North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry area on Monday, 22nd July.

The urban areas of Chennai like T Nagar, Taramani, Virugambakkam, Vadapalani and Saligramam received rain on Sunday while the city`s southern suburbs recorded 1.2mm of rainfall.

City-based weather blogger Pradeep John who runs the popular Facebook page Tamil Nadu Weatherman noted that Sunday`s weather is expected to continue. He has noted: Monsoonish drizzles to continue in KTCC from the stratiform clouds. A very good spell of rains in and around South Chennai region. The coastal places got severe intense rains. Today this Ooty-like the weather will continue throughout the day with breaks, occasional drizzles and light rains. Rains in KTCC will again pick up at evening or night or tomorrow morning.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has noted in this regard: Strong wind convergence in the lower level Westerlies are taking place over Kerala & adjoining areas of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu at present. This feature is likely to continue for the next 2 days causing widespread rainfall with scattered heavy to very heavy & isolated extremely heavy falls over Kerala & Mahe and Coastal Karnataka during the same period.

There are prospects of heavy rainfall at isolated places on Monday (today, 22nd July) over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The sea conditions may be rough to very rough.

The southwest monsoon has resulted in an increased flow of water into dams. The Papanasam dam, located in Tirunelveli district, saw a rising inflow of water from 949 cusecs two days ago to 2,911 cusecs on Saturday while the Gadananathi dam rose by 10 feet to 35 feet posting an n inflow of 273 cusecs.
