Aadi Amavasai - 2019

The day when New Moon occurs in the Tamil calendar month of Aadi, known especially as ‘AadiAmavasai’, is considered to be a special and sacred day, as per the Hindu religion.
For this year 2019, the occasion of the sacred Aadi Amavasai falls on Wednesday, 31st July.
As per the Hindu Almanac, the New Moon or Amavasai Thithi is scheduled to commence at 11.57 AM on 31st July (Wednesday) and conclude at 8.41 AM on Thursday, 1st August.
Aadi Amavasai is one of the most powerful days of the moon to offer ‘Tarpanam’ to honour the departed ancestors and seek and receive their blessings.
The month of Aadi is considered as auspicious when the divine forces bless the earth gracefully and answer their prayers. Offering ‘Tarpanam’ rituals for the ancestors on Aadi amavasai help their souls to attain Moksha or Salvation and also grants the performed their blessings!
On the New Moon Days, the Sun and the Moon come under the same sign.
The sun is symbolic of the father and the soul. The moon is symbolic of the mother and the spirit. Aadi Amavasai assumes greater significance because the sun and the moon inhibit the sign of the Moon, that is Cancer.
On this day, the spirits are more willing to accept their offerings and are satiated when their successors or heirs perform tarpanam rituals for them. Further, during Aadi, the sun moves towards the south and this period is known as ‘Dakshinayanam’. Since Aadi Amavasai or New Moon Day happens to be the 1st New Moon Day of the Dakshinayanam period, it is considered as the most powerful day to perform the ‘tarpanam’ rituals to the ancestors!
