Not even single application received for masters in Tamil department of Dravidian University

This is a shocking piece of news for those who are associated with the development of Tamil language plus those who like Tamil etc. It is now revealed that in 2019 no applications were received by the Dravidian University for masters programme in the Tamil department. The department had sanctioned intake of 20 students is known.

It was in the year 1997 Dravidian University was set up in Kuppam in the state of Andhra Pradesh with the support from all 4 southern states like TN, AP, Kerala and Karnataka. The main objective was to promote the Dravidian languages.

Important information is at the PG level the language department offers masters, M Phil and PhD programmes. Funds from respective states have been responsible for the education of a student from MA till PhD.  In the year 2005, Tamil department was started in this Dravidian University. This Tamil department has got 4 faculties including the head of the department.

According to Mr. Vishnukumaran, head in-charge, the students boarding fees as well as lodging fees is being provided by the state government through full scholarship. He spoke about how in the PhD programme there are 6 full time students and 7 part time students. He finally shed light on how in M. Phil there is one part time student.

It is worth mentioning here that the Tamil department has completed research to the tune of Rs 10.25 crores till now. Point is in the last few years of time very few students have shown interest.

An assistant professor belonging to the Language and Translation Studies, Mr. Mariappan spoke about how this department had as many as 6 students in the last year and in the earlier year there were 9 students. He expressed his shock about how in this 2019 just one candidate appeared for the entrance test but did not join the MA course.

It was then mentioned by Mr. Vishnukumaran that there are jobs for the graduates and how 60 students are working as translators now. He shed light on how some students are in central university and how some are presidential award winners also.

Mr. Vishnukumar was unhappy regarding the awareness about the programme. Point is the department also offers one year diploma and 6 months certificate courses for the students. It is important to note that Mr. R. Venkatesan, Tamil development and Information Department secretary has been listed as states representative on the universitys executive council.

For the sake of admission, the central university in Thiruvarur has conducted 2nd round of entrance test. It is said that the state representative could recommend a similar move by the Dravidian university. The information is minister for Tamil Language, Mr. K. Pandiarajan, spoke about how he would look into it.
