Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E. Palanisamy had announced earlier that drinking water will be supplied to Chennai by train from Jolarpettai in order to part alleviate the acute scarcity of drinking water in Chennai Metro City. A survey and scrutiny were conducted on this after the state government allotted funds of Rs. 65 Crores for this purpose.
Subsequently, the pipe-laying activity from Mettuchakkarakkuppam to Parsampettai Railway Station was taken up. This activity was completed yesterday (Wednesday, 10th July). The test run was conducted as well. During the test, there was some hitch in the pipeline in the Parsampattai Kootu Salai and the test run was stopped. After this was repaired the authorities again switched on the motors and conducted the test run.
Once the water reached the Parsampattai Railway Station, the filling up of water in the railway wagons was taken up and continued throughout the night.
It is expected that the train carrying water will start from Jolarpettai after 10.00 AM.
