A bite from a stray dog might lead to deadly rabies in us is well known. In many streets of Chennai there are stray dogs present and these dogs create issues for the public as they get bitten by these stray dogs often.

Beginning from July, the GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation would be involved in an important work. The work is GCC would be carrying out mass immunization of more than 57300 stray dogs in the Chennai city limits. For this, an amount of Rs 77 lakhs would be spent.  By this effort, rabies could be eliminated in Chennai.

It is said that this immunisation drive would have 7 teams consisting of veterinary surgeon, assistants, dog catchers, helpers and dog van owners. These people would go for different divisions of the zone and would catch dogs for immunization.

As per an official it is very clear that all the 7 teams must cover each division in a zone. The dogs would be caught by using a butterfly net and once a dog is caught then it is vaccinated and marked with vegetable dye so that the same dog is not caught again. There would be some outsourced staffs in the team and corporation employees would be involved in the supervision works.

The point is assistant health officers, corporation assistant veterinary surgeons plus sanitary officers and inspectors would be playing their roles to perfection. Information collected is this immunization drive would be carried out for little more than 2 months and each team would target to vaccinate 150 dogs every day. In a day, more than 1000 dogs would be vaccinated by these 7 teams.

The estimated time for the completion of this immunisation drive would be 80 days. This was according to the schedule prepared. In the same zone, all the 7 teams would start and street wise cover all the division present in the zone. In the beginning, the extended areas of the corporation would be covered and then the core areas of the corporation.

Another official later pointed out that the pictures of dogs caught, vaccinated and dyed would be uploaded by the respective team so that the corporation could keep tab on the immunization process. It is revealed that this drive would help tally the number of dogs with the number estimated by the dog census.

It was pointed out by some sources that the civic body would procure anti-rabies vaccines and equipment from TN Medical Services Corporation. The superb information is this immunization drive is a part of GCC initiative for rabies free Chennai city. This plan to immunize dogs is being appreciated by the Chennai residents. The people also want the corporation to take steps to reduce the stray dog population and cattle present on the streets.
