Administration Council of Anna University approves a hike in Academic Fees

The academic fees for the courses offered by Anna University are to be hiked up.

Anna University Administration Council and the State Government of Tamil Nadu have both given their approval for this.

According to this recent hike, the semester (6-months period) academic fees which were Rs. 8500 will now be increased to Rs. 15000.

The academic fees will vary for the different courses offered. In this aspect, the minimum revised semester academic fee will be Rs. 15000 and the maximum will be Rs. 23000.

Anna University, which has been facing an acute financial crisis for the last few years decided to hike the academic fees for its 4 sections Guindy Engineering College, Alagappa Technology College, Architectural School, MIT (Madras Institute of Technology) and 13 other member colleges after a long gap of 17 years.

Accordingly, the semester fees varying from Rs. 8500 to Rs. 12000for various faculties until now will be increased from the academic year 2019-20 onwards to a minimum of Rs. 20000 and a maximum of Rs. 30000.

Anna University had sent this proposal for approval by the University Administration Council, Financial Council and the Tamil Nadu State Government. However, the State Government not only rejected this proposal but asked to reduce the extent of hike and resubmit the same.

Meanwhile, during a recent function of the release of the rank/merit list of engineering course applicants held at the Directorate of the Technical Education, the press reporters raised questions regarding this academic fees hike to the state minister for higher education K. P. Anbazhagan and Secretary Mangatram Sharma.

They explained that they had advised the University to reduce the fees hike at least 20% to 30%. However, there would not be any hike in fee for the students of government engineering colleges.

In this scenario, in a meeting conducted on Thursday (20th June) evening by the Anna University administration Council, based on the government insistence, approval to reduce the increase in fees by 20% to 30%.

Accordingly, in the 4 sections of Anna University offering BE courses, the revised semester fees from the current academic year will be a minimum of Rs. 15000 to a maximum of Rs. 23000. At the same time, for the 13 member colleges under Anna University, the hike is semester fees will be lesser than above.
