The Madhya Kailash junction in Adyar, Chennai is a very busy place and traffic congestion occur here is well known. On Thursday, there was heavy traffic congestion here due to a strange reason. The important information collected is a gaping hole appeared near Madhya Kailash junction in Adyar and as a result of this hole the traffic was affected badly for several hours.

Towards OMR, a 6 feet deep sinkhole of 10 ft in diameter appeared on the road and created huge issues for the public here. The shocking information is this is the second time a deep hole has appeared here in just within a month of time. It must be noted that first hole appeared 20 m ahead of the stretch and opposite to the temple present. In the year 2015, Madhya Kailash made news when a huge crater appeared in the place after heavy rains. The reason quoted for this gaping hole now is same as that which happened in 2015 and that is due to leaking sewage pipeline.

It was about 30 years back pipeline was laid here and it got corroded and damaged. This was as per the officials belonging to the metro water department. Point is the pipeline carries sewage from Adyar to Perungudi treatment plant. A month back, officials attended to the leak at the cave-in site opposite to the temple and spoke about how they were not aware of the leaks spreading to other areas.

The information gathered is the pipeline that carries sewage from Adyar zone to Perungudi treatment plant has been damaged for a month. On Thursday only, this issue was understood by the officials of metro water department.  It is now revealed that the 1m diameter pipeline is being replaced.

According to an official belonging to metro water department, there could be similar corrosion and damage to the pipeline along the entire stretch since sewage releases chemicals and gases. At the joints along the pipeline, most of the damages take place. To replace the entire pipeline on the stretch, a proposal has been sent and government would take decision about that.

It was also later mentioned by an official that the road belonged to the bus route or BRR department and metro water is repairing the pipeline now. The point is soil as well as debris would be poured by metro water and patch work would be carried out by using cement. Finally tenders would be called for and the stretch would be laid.

It is important to note that the traffic moved at very slow speed due to cave-in and police barricaded the stretch. A techie from OMR expressed his thoughts about the cave-in and slow traffic movement and spoke about how it took more than half hour to cross Madhya Kailash stretch.
