There has been lots of movement of solid wastes to the landfill sites in Chennai city. The news now is Chennai Corporation has associated with the Citizen Consumer and Civic Action Group for the programme to minimize the movement of solid wastes to the landfill sites. In Anna Nagar, a major initiative towards Zero Waste Chennai has started.

Important point here is GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation has signed Memorandum of Understanding or MoU with the Citizen Consumer and Civic Action Group/CAG and it would be playing its role of a knowledge partner. Minimizing the movement of solid waste to landfill sites is the main objective of this Zero Waste initiative.

It is revealed that the wastes should be processed and converted in-situ at decentralized composting or organic waste processing unit or sent to specialized scientific disposal centres. The point is a live zero- waste model would be created and it would be replicated all over Chennai city and this was as per the plans. Door to door campaigning was done at Anna Nagar and the initiative was launched at Anna Nagar, zone 8 ward 104. A chart explaining the role and responsibilities of the residents would be displayed by the corporation staffs like animators, conservancy workers, engineers etc. This would be done during the campaign. In the next step a pledge would be signed and this would indicate their commitment to their source segregation and composting.

It is now said that on 5th June 2019 MRFs or Material Recovery Facilities and Micro Composting Centres would be launched and campaign would be extended. Non-compostable solid waste could be temporarily stored by the local body or by any person authorised by the corporation to facilitate segregation, sorting and segregation of different components of wastes and MRFs play a huge role in this. Informal sector of waste pickers or any other workforce could be making their presence felt.

The sensational information that has emerged out now is Corporation and CAG expects to declare Zone 8 as Zero Waste Zone by 15th of August 2019. There are also plans to extend the process to all other zones by October month.
