Air-conditioned electric train service to commence in Chennai for the 1st time (after Mumbai)

The Railway Officials have informed that following the Mumbai Metro City, the facility of air-conditioned electric train services will be introduced in the next 3 months in the section Chennai Beach-Chingleput.

Southern Railway had earlier recommended to the Railway Commission the introduction of air-conditioned electric train services on the Chennai Beach-Chengalpattu train services. It had also furnished in its recommendation the details of the number of passengers in this route, the necessity for air-conditioned services, and the stations where the maximum number of passengers avail of this service.

A 12 coach electric train with the air-conditioned facility was introduced for the 1st ever a time in India in Mumbai Metro City in the year 2017. In a similar trend, earnest activities are afoot to arrange air-conditioned electric train services in Chennai Metro City as well. It is expected that the time table for this service will be released in the Railway Schedule Guide for this year.

The Southern Railway officials shared in this regard:

Even as the the population of Chennai Metro City dwellers keeps increasing, the boundaries of the city have also bee expanding gradually. Naturally, this has necessitated additional transport services! The train is the 1st choice of the Chennai citizens for travel. The higher officials of the Chennai Division have been reviewing regarding the restoration of the electric train services between Chennai Beach-Chengalpattu.

Meanwhile, we have recommended the introduction of air-conditioned electric train services to the Railway Commission. In this recommendation, we have detailed the necessity for the introduction of air-conditioning. So, we expect approval shortly. Further, the air-conditioned electric trains will stop only at a few stations.

In a similar trend, as the electric trains are manufactured by ICF (Integral Coach Factory), there would not be any delay in procuring the air-conditioned trains. Thus, we expect that the introduction of the air-conditioned electric train services in the next 3 months.

The ICF authorities shared: It is a well-known and usual thing that air-conditioned trains are manufactured at ICF. However, only the Railway Commission will decide regarding the operation of the air-conditioned electric train services.

Details of fare

Presently, the fare for an individual to travel from Chennai Beach to Chengalpattu in 1st Class is Rs. 165. When utilizing the monthly pass service, it would cost Rs. 1000. In this situation, it is gathered that the fare for the air-conditioned electric train services will be double the fare of the 1st class travel.
