The latest piece of news is on Monday, 6th May 2019, long pending demands of unreserved and suburban train commuters entering the Puratchi Thalaivar DR. MGR Central station from eastern side of Wall Tax Road got fulfilled. The information gathered is the officials of Chennai division of southern railway have opened a booking office with 6 ticket counters. It is now revealed that the counter that is present at the ground floor would enable commuters to buy all kinds of unreserved tickets. This would include tickets of suburban train travel.

An official expressed his thoughts and spoke about how in the past allied departments like IRCTC or Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation and others have occupied the spots and these spots would now be occupied by the new counters.

It is amazing to note that till now Chennai Central railway station which is one of India’s biggest railway stations did not have a single booking office in its premises. The point is no other major railway station in India had faced this type of embarrassing situation.

Till now any person coming via Wall Tax Road entrance especially from Chennai city’s northern and north-eastern suburbs was forced to walk up to Moore Market Complex or MMC station to purchase a ticket and walk back. It must be noted that this was mainly for those who wanted to board train to another state. Many people had issues with this as it was a tiresome process.

The important point to be noted is majority of trains bound for north-eastern states depart from platforms at the main station and here only the platform tickets were given. The officials have confirmed that the passengers coming from the western and northern suburbs by EMU trains could continue to book tickets at the counters.

Information collected is officials belonging to commercial department and the additional divisional railway manager made their presence felt at the inauguration and they bought the first tickets. It was later pointed out by the sources that in the first four hours after the counters were opened tickets worth amount of Rs 75,000 were sold.

According to an official it is clear that the staffs cannot complain about the heat and operate less number of ticket counters. They must keep the counters open at all hours of time. It is now brought out that the cubicles of the commercial staff issuing tickets would be air-conditioned.
