Precautionary actions to be taken by farmers in lieu of cyclone Fani

The State Government Department of Agriculture, Thiruvarur District has advised the farmers for some precautionary action in lieu of the cyclone ‘Fani’.

As per the guidelines of the IMD (Indian Meteorological Department), it is expected that there are prospects of heavy rains with strong winds day-after-tomorrow (30th April). So, in order to protect the coconut trees from this, the farmers are advised to take the following precautionary actions:

If there is a high density of coconuts, tender coconuts, green sheaves, dry sheaves, on top of the tree, it may lead to the tree being uprooted due to the wind force. So, leaving aside from the green sheaves, cut off and remove the tender coconuts, coconuts, dry sheaves, etc. This will enable the tree to withstand the forceful wind as the extra weight on top has been removed.

The farmers should stop watering the coconut farm as the storm/rain approaches. This would enable the roots of the coconut tree to set strongly within the oil and would help prevent the tree from going dry.

The farmers should also stop if they have undertaken expansion activities which can be taken up after the cyclone passes and the rain stops.

Further, they need to drain the excess water in the fields of rice, pulses, cotton, sugarcane, and peanuts.

Cyclone warning devices have been set up to help the farmers in the offices of the Joint Director (Agriculture) and at various places in the circle. The control room will keep functioning 24 hours until 5th May.

It has been mentioned that in case the farmers seek any information, they may contact the above control centre.
