The climax of the grand Chitirai Festival - Divine marriage of Madurai Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar

The world famous Chithirai festival celebrated in Madurai Meenakshi-Sundareswarar temple commenced with the divine flag-hoisting ceremony on 8th April and the grand festival is in glorious progress.

As a part of the festival tradition, the deities of Goddess Meenakshi Amman and Lord Sundareswarar are taken on a procession on the streets both in the mornings and evenings to offer Darshan to the devotees and bless them.

In this situation, one of the most important events of the festival, the coronation or ‘Pattbhishekham’ was performed on the deity of Goddess Meenakshi Amman. Earlier, the deity of Lord Meenakshi Amman was specially adorned and special poojas were performed with divine instrumental music, The Crown was adorned and the ‘sengol’ was placed on the hands of the deity of the Goddess Meenakshi Amman.

As a continuation of the festival, the climax ceremony marking the peak of the Chithirai festival, the divine wedding of Goddess Meenakshi-Lord Sundareswarar is set to be performed today (Wednesday, 17th April).

Subsequently, the sacred chariot procession on the Masi Streets is scheduled to be conducted tomorrow (Thursday, 18th April).
