Parking regulation along residential roads

Posted on: 05/Apr/2019 9:39:05 AM
As a move to streamline parking facilities in residential areas, the Chennai Traffic Police and Institute of Transportation and Development Policy have joined hands with each other to take measures. In their efforts to implement better parking, the streets have got beautified and parking permits are to be introduced.

Tactical Urbanism is the new concept to be introduced. This will enforce a changeover with the use of temporary interventions using makeshift furniture, ropes or colors or planters. With these objects, it will be possible to regulate parking space and make best use of available space.

This is a pilot project where selective streets are adopted. This includes RA Puram beginning at Sringeri Mutt Road. There are a number of abandoned vehicles lying along these stretches.  In spite of removal, the vehicles keep coming back, say Deputy Commissioner of East, Mr. Sree Abinav.

The Tiruveedhi Amman Kovil Street Residents Association or the TAKSRA have formed a streamlined parking system in association with the police officials. To start with, they initiated at Mutt Road and went on to paint the walls. Notifications were sent to all the travel companies to stop parking their cars along this stretch. Next to this, we are now in the efforts to curb parking of vehicles along roadside, says a TAKSRA member.

As this turns to be a success, the Chennai Corporation will work on complete road redesigning. Proper designing of streets is important in order to enforce parking rules effectively. Such a road is Sringeri Mutt Road. Being a school zone, it should naturally be safe and secured for children.
