These days the residents belonging to Chennai city often wake up to news regarding lack of water, drought etc in the upcoming summer season. It is well known to us now that the northeast monsoons had failed and it has not brought enough rainfall and finally has led to severe water shortage in the Chennai city.

It has been revealed that this lack of adequate rainfall and a protracted drought for a period of 3 years have begun impacting the water table of Chennai city now. The shocking piece of news is the water table of Chennai has dipped on an average to a depth of 8 m in the month of February. Rain Center is Chennai city based voluntary organisation and a study was undertaken by this organisation. The above mentioned fact was based on the study only.

The point to be noted is residential complexes in some parts of Chennai are turning self sufficient and sinking open wells. Recently the residents belonging to Bishop Garden in Raja Annamalai Puram in Chennai were surprised to see water present at a depth of 17 ft and this happened when an open well was dug in their complex. It must be noted that the residents of R.A Puram opted to tap shallow aquifer this month as the water drawn from deep bore well was salty in taste.

On Friday, 22nd March, city of Chennai would be observing World Water Day and hence it is important to adopt solutions that would lessen the severe water crisis in Chennai. As per the experts it is clear that the forthcoming summer season would be the correct time to opt for open wells as Chennai city’s deep aquifer have already been used through bore wells. In the month of February, some observation wells like those in places like Choolaimedu, Anna Nagar, Vadapalani have gone dry. It shows the dependence on the groundwater resources due to dip in the piped water supply. This was confirmed by Rain Centre study.

In the month of February in 2018, water level in Chepauk declined to a depth of 5.9 m whereas in 2019 in February the water level in Chepauk declined to a depth of 11.5 m. It has been pointed out that in places like Ambattur etc some residents are digging bore wells up to a depth of 300ft. Rain Center has been receiving many calls regarding advice about open wells.
