People frequently visiting Rameswaram Street in T. Nagar would have been familiar with 2 ration shops there. There have been some discussions regarding shifting of these two ration shops from this place to Mambalam High Road.

The important information collected now is the members of T. Nagar Welfare Association have written to the Civil Supplies Corporation and TUCS or Tamil Nadu Urban Co-operative Society. It is worthy to note here that these above mentioned are responsible for running the two ration shops in Rameswaram Street in T. Nagar. The residents now do not want shifting of these two ration shops.

On TUCS there has been huge political pressure to shift the ration shops that have been functioning since decades. These ration shops have been highly beneficial to the residents of streets adjoining Usman Road and other places in T. Nagar. The important point is residents residing around Usman Road including on Ramanujam Street, Soundararajan Street, and those in and around Gandhi Street get benefits from the shops HC 007 and HC 009.

A person belonging to T. Nagar RWA expressed his views about shifting of the ration shops. He explained about how since the month of February there has been heavy political pressure from the local leaders to shift the two ration shops to the rented outlet in Mambalam High Road. He then added that all the beneficiaries plus residents of this place were against the move to shift the ration shops.

A resident belonging to Rameswaram Street spoke about how due to paucity of supplies one have to go to the ration shops many times. The ration shops when shifted would go almost 1 km from the original place. He finally threw light about the difficulties of the residents of Usman Road as they have to go 2 km atleast to reach the ration shops.

The decision to shift the ration shops were confirmed by the officials of TUCS but the officials did not give any reason like political pressure etc. The point is TUCS plays a role in running of ration shops and grains as well as commodities were got from civic supplies corporation
