A unique weather observation during the month of February is that the temperature was never down below 20 Degrees Celsius throughout! The absence of the northern winds is the reason attributed to this. It is noteworthy that this is the 2nd time in the past 15 years that temperature never went below 20 Degrees Celsius in a month!

On Wednesday, weather stations in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded 25.8 degrees Celsius and 24.4 degrees Celsius, nearly three degrees above normal for the period.

Noteworthy points from experts on this:

The Chennai Meteorological Department officials explained that winds from northern regions normally cooled the coastal regions during February. This year, such winds did not prevail consistently and this had led to warmer nights.

N. Puviarasan, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, Chennai, said the city was experiencing south-easterly winds that brought in moisture. There was a spike in minimum temperature this month. In the interior parts of the state such as Salem and Karur, the day temperature would rise by a few notches as it took time for the south-easterly winds to penetrate. The maximum temperature was likely to be three to four degrees Celsius above normal at many interior areas on Thursday too!

K. Srikanth, who blogs at Chennaiyil Oru Mazhaikalam, said the average minimum temperature this February was 22.8 degrees Celsius. This indicated that the city experienced warm nights compared to previous years of the decade.

According to weather expert Y.E.A. Raj, interior areas get warm faster during the day as there are no temperature control factors like the sea breeze.
