In Chennai in 2018, 24 lakhs people violated traffic rules

Many people in the Chennai city use their own vehicles to reach their places of destination as they find it very convenient. Inspite of the rule imposed by the traffic police department to wear helmets while driving the two wheelers, many people do not wear helmets.

The shocking piece of information got is in 2018 the traffic police in Chennai booked the highest number of cases 24 lakhs. Of many traffic violations, the most important violation that was booked was about not wearing the helmets.

The department collected a total penalty amount of Rs 27 crores out of which Rs 4 crores was collected from those who did not wear helmets. Other violations like illegal parking of the vehicles and jumping signals were noticed by the traffic police and they had booked persons for these violations also. For illegal parking of vehicles amount of Rs 3.3 crores was collected and for jumping signals amount of Rs 2.9 crores was collected by the traffic police. For obstruction as many as 1.51 lakh cases were booked and amount of Rs 1.53 crores was collected.

It is known that drunken driving and not using meter in the autos were also traffic violations and the traffic department had collected fine amount of Rs 13.75 lakhs and Rs 1.14 lakhs respectively.

Thozhan is a NGO that is involved on the road safety in Chennai city. Founder of this NGO, Mr. Radhakrishnan expressed his thoughts and spoke about how the figures mentioned above just showed the tip of an iceberg and how by monitoring the CCTV cameras in Chennai city there would be atleast 70000 violations in the city. He shed light on how there were around 4000 traffic policemen in Chennai city and how as many as 500 posts were vacant.

Technology has been playing huge roles in our lives now is well known. It was pointed out by Mr. A. Arun, additional commissioner of police, that the department is having plans to introduce contactless enforcement. By this the motorists violating the traffic rules would be traced and penalized by the help of technology. Procurement of high end cameras is being done now for the purpose of catching the traffic violators.
