The moon has got 2-phases - the growing phase and the diminishing phase, each of a fortnight duration. New Moon Day, known as ‘Amavasai; in Tamil (moon does not appear on this night) is the last day of the 2nd diminishing phase. It is a faith that on this day some power remains on the earth.

By observing ‘penance’ (or viradham) on this sacred day and offering prayers to our favourite Gods, we can realise all our unfulfilled desires. So, it is worthwhile knowing the true significance of this special day.

First, get up early on the New Moon Day and have a bath. Then, in order to drive away the entire evil elements resident inside the house, wash the entire house with salted water. Then, light up an earthenware or any other lamp in the Pooja room in front of the deity or picture of Lord Vinayaka in the morning and evening.

On this New Moon Day, avoid eating non-vegetarian items, or dishes with onion and garlic and have only mild dishes (‘Sathveekm’) as intake. If ok, one can subsist with milk and fruits throughout the day! A visit to the temple is mandatory on this day.

The devotees who had received ‘Manthra Deeksha’ or the devotees who have taken a vow to pray God to realise their desires can skip eating throughout the day and spend time praying and chanting slogans on the favourite Gods. This would definitely help realise one’s desires. The negative or untoward energy prevailing in the house will get removed and a positive energy/power will flow bringing property and desired items.

The legendary belief and the folklore observe that our departed elders visit earth on this any to see us! So, by offering ‘Tarpan’ to these departed ancestors and making a special offering by way of dishes, etc., will help get rid of ‘pithru sabham’ – ancestral curse. Further, we will also receive the whole-hearted blessings of our ancestors.
