The presence of additional flood lights to make Marina Beach safer

Who doesnt like to visit the popular Marina Beach in Chennai?  This beach in Chennai is the longest natural urban beach in India is a known fact. It is now said that corporation of Chennai would be playing its role in installing additional LED floodlights at as many as 15 spots in this famous Marina Beach. The important point is a distance of 3.1km stretch of Marina Beach would have these high intensity floodlights.

An official belonging to the corporation of Chennai pointed out atleast 30 LED flood lights of 1000 watts each would be fixed at a height of 30m along the beach. To improve the look of this amazing beach in Chennai, the civic body has invited bids for the project estimated at Rs 43 lakhs.

Night time beach visitors faced difficulties due to dimly lit spots in this beach and it was confirmed by some visitors earlier also. A series of meetings by the stakeholders took place and they discussed about the ways to improve the look of the beach. It was in the year 2013 civic body made news when it began improving the LED floodlights and commissioned additional high mast lights on the Marina sands at a cost of Rs 60 lakhs. There were many complaints that the beach had turned dirty and it scared many foreign tourists etc and these complaints came after 2013 is known.

A marine conservationist Supraja Dharini expressed her views and spoke about how installation of floodlights on the sands of Marina beach would create many issues for the turtles nesting on the beach sands. He pointed out that the hatchlings might not go back into the seas as they would get attracted towards the floodlights. She finally hinted about the government order that said about dimming of the lights at 9 pm during the nesting season.
