Cyclone Phethai to cross coast with stormy winds

IMD (Indian Meteorological Department) has informed that the Cyclone Phethai, presently drifting towards Andhra, will cross the coast with stormy winds in the afternoon today (Monday, 17th December).

The Cyclone Phethai is presently drifting towards the west-central and the adjacent southwest of the Bay of Bengal. It was drifting at a speed of 16 kmph and now, the speed of drifting has increased to 23 kmph towards the north.

Presently, it is located 150 km away from Machillipattinam and 193 km away from Kakinada, and 320 km away from Chennai. The cyclone is expected to continue drifting towards the north and will cross the coast today afternoon near Kakinada.

Due to the non-conducive environmental conditions, the cyclone is likely to weaken and will cross the coast with stormy winds and heavy rains. The speed of the wind may vary from 70 kmph to 90 kmph. It may even increase to 100 kmph.

As the cyclone is set to cross the coast, there are prospects of heavy to very heavy rain in the coastal areas of Andhra and Odisha, There are prospects of heavy rains in South Chattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Andaman.
