Chennai might get heavy rains, cyclone likely in the next 36 hours

Recently cyclone Gaja made news when it destroyed certain parts in the state of Tamil Nadu. This cyclone Gaja made landfall near Vedaranyam is known .The latest news that has emerged out now is another storm is brewing over Bay of Bengal and this storm might bring heavy rainfall in north coastal TN including Chennai city in this weekend. It must be noted that in the past also Chennai city had many cyclones and many people suffered. According to the IMD it is now clear that the system is a deep depression and by Friday it is likely to intensify into a tropical cyclone. It is likely to move in the north-westerly direction to Andhra Pradesh and north Tamil Nadu.

This cyclone would be known as ‘Phethai’ and the name was given by Thailand. It is a northern Indian Ocean tropical cyclone. The regional weather inference of IMD stated that the depression was about 1150 km southeast of Chennai and 1350 km southeast of Machilipatnam. The weather inference further explained about the possibility of this depression intensifying into a deep depression in the next 12 hours of time and further into a cyclonic storm in subsequent 24 hours of time. In the next 72 hours of time it is likely to move towards AP and adjoining parts of north TN coast. From 15th of December, there would be heavy to very heavy rains in isolated places over north coastal TN.

As per the chief meteorologist of Skymet, Mr. Mahesh Palawat, the system might intensify into a storm when it nears the coast He also spoke in awe about how if the system intensifies into a cyclonic system then it would be the 7th cyclone this season in Indian Ocean region. He later added that there would be rains from Saturday and it would gradually increase. On 16th of December there would be a heavy spell of rains and the intensity of the system would decrease. Rainfall would be present in Chennai as well as in northern parts of TN.

As per the Chennai based weather blogger, Mr. Pradeep, in the year 2010 the cyclone ‘Laila’ made landfall near Machilipatnam and intense spell of rains lasted for just a day in Chennai. He further spoke about how the rains would pound Chennai if the cyclone makes landfall near Nellore or Kavali in south AP. He finally threw light on how the present one is also likely to come near Chennai and move up and how this would bring intense rains in the city of Chennai for one day. For the next 24 hours, the sky over the city of Chennai is likely to remain cloudy. The maximum temperature would be around 31 degree Celsius and the minimum temperature would be around 23 degree Celsius.
