Hot, spicy Pepper Rasam. How to make it?

Looking for some hot serving on your plate that will take the phlegm off the throat! 

You’ve stepped into the right window! Here we have quick-to-do, healthy, tasty, spicy, Pepper Rasam! 

First of all, this Rasam Recipe does not demand you have Rasam Powder.

Ingredients required 

Ingredients needed for grinding 
  • Pepper -  ½ spoon
  • Cumin seeds -  ½ spoon 
  • Red chillies - 2 Nos. 
  • Garlic - 6-8 pods 
Ingredients needed for Rasam base 
  • Seedless tamarind - size of a lemon 
  • Tomato - 1 
  • Water - 1.5-2 cups 
  • Turmeric
  • Asafoetida - ¼ spoon 
  • Salt - as required 
  • Finely chopped corriander leaves - a hand full 

Cooking Method 

  1. Heat a quarter cup of water and soak the tamarind, as the first step 
  2. In a mixer, add all the ingredients mentioned above for grinding - pepper, cumin seeds, red chillies, and garlic. Make a coarse paste by adding a little water 
  3. Take a large, wide pan. Add oil, mustard seeds and curry leaves and allow it to sputter. 
  4. To this, add the ground paste and saute for 1-2 minutes (Feel the aroma!)
  5. To this, add turmeric powder and asafetida and chopped coriander leaves and give it a stirr 
  6. It’s now time to add a tomato squeezed with your hands. Add it and again give it a stir and allow it to get cooked with the masala 
  7. Now seek the tamarind soaked in hot water. Extract only the tamarind water and throw off the leftover pulp. Add this thick tamarind pulp to the pan and add required amount of water. Mix well and add salt as per what your taste bud wants 
  8. Give it a nice stir and keep the fame in simmer. Allow it to get cooked without lid until the tomatoes turn soft and raw smell of tamarind goes off
  9. So, now your hot Pepper Rasam is done!

Serving 

  • As Soup - this rasam can be plainly had as a soup! For this, extra pepper powder can be  added to it or had as it is 
  • As accompaniment to rice - serve it with rice. A hot egg omelette or chicken gravy or mushroom masala will do wonders on your tastebuds! Crispy, spicy fish fry can never be skipped with a Rasam!
