Metropolitan Transport Corporation cuts down many bus routes in and around Chennai with the connectivity to outskirts. This can abolish the public transportation means to some of the important last mile connectivity in Chennai creating a big leap of disappointment for the long time commuters. The recent data clearly reveals the MTC’s reduction of bus routed for last few years. Now totally 40 bus routes have been estimated under completely stopped routes in terms of public transportation.

The above mentioned bus routes were integral part of the city’s transportation with large crowd of passengers. The slow degradation of MTC services favors private travel modes such as bikes and cabs. To make it further worse the ever increasing fuel price is already punching a big hole in the monthly financial aspect of people.

Pattabiram, Thoraipakam, Kolathur Lakshmi Nagar, KK Nagar, Kodungaiyur, Perambur, Ayanavaram, G K M Colony, Broadway, Poonamallee and T Nagar are some of the areas where last mile connectivity was reduced constantly for last three to four years. Newly developed areas in Chennai and the outskirts have also lost several bus route connections causing disruption in public livelihood.

Perambur to Thoaraipakkam bus route, 129 was well received by the public owing to the easy mode of travel connecting SRP tools, Tidel Park and Kanthanchavadi zones of South Chennai. Now the bus route was abolished and people have to take two buses for travelling from Perambur to OMR.

Poonamalle and Shollinganallur is another such route (66S) that provided direct connectivity between the two main junctions covering important areas. This route was also stopped recently which was a big blow to the passengers working in and around the mentioned zones with public transport as an only mode of travel.

Buses to Porur from Shollinganallur and Pallikaranai was suddenly withdrawn without any alternative arrangement or notification disrupting people’s lives. MTC and state government should take immediate measures taking the public feedback into account in terms of connectivity between many important areas of Chennai.

MTC and Chennai Corporation claims that the removal of certain routes was a result of withdrawing old-aged buses that should be replaced with new ones. MTC shows the data of 3600 operating buses on 833 routes transporting more than 38 lakh commuters on daily basis. Cancelled buses will be put for the areas where there is a huge transportation demand said one of the officials of MTC.
