Don’t be surprised when you come across names like Thiruvallikeni, Poovirundhavalli, Tiruchirapalli etc. It is now revealed that the government of Tamil Nadu would be renaming the towns, localities and as many as 220 streets in TN by December. There were many suggestions from Tamil scholars belonging to all the 32 districts of TN and a high level committee has been formed to finalize the suggestions of these Tamil scholars. This was stated in the recent order that was issued by the state Tamil development department. The suggestions would be shortlisted by a ten member team headed by district collectors. Later these suggestions would be submitted to high level committee headed by Ma Foi. K. Pandiarajan who is the minister for Tamil official language.

As per Mr. K. Vijayaraghavan, director of the department, it is clear that the names of the places must be pronounced the Tamil way and should not be tweaked to suit English usage. He quoted the example of Tiruvallikeni being referred as Triplicane now. He spoke about how the names of the places must be retained in Tamil and should be transliterated when used in English language.

Kancheepuram collector, Mr. Ponniah, had sought suggestions from the people for effectively implementing the order. There were also comments from a Tamil scholar named Ramakrishnan belonging to Coimbatore. He commented about how the government must rename places with Sanskrit names also and names with that of dominant caste at that place. It is important to mention here that despite an order barring usage of caste names for particular places names such as Kavundampalayam and Pallapalayam are present. Mr. Ramakrishnan later added that the government must change this before passing the final notification on transliteration.

The state government move to rename the places in Tamil was appreciated by many others and Prof Opilla Mathivanan, head of Tamil Literature department, University of Madras, was one amongst them. He highlighted that this move would help the people remember Tamil pronunciation.
