From the year 2020, Chennai airport to have paperless boarding

There are many people who use Chennai airport these days as they find travelling by flights saves their precious time. The news that has emerged out now is from the year 2020 onwards boarding flights from the Chennai airport would be easy and paperless for the passengers. To verify the identity of the passengers, the Chennai airport management would establish camera enabled e-gates and facial recognition technology would be utilized. By the end of the next year this new system would be making its presence felt in the Chennai airport.
Starting from the entry gates of the airport terminal to the boarding gates, paperless boarding of the passengers would be possible as the Chennai airport would introduce biometric and face recognition system. This would be as a part of Digi Yatra scheme. It is said that this new method would provide seamless, consistent and paperless service experience at the airport. People coming to Chennai airport would be surprised to see e-gates with cameras and scanners at the entry gates of the terminals check-in area, security check gates and boarding gates and passengers would be allowed based on their face recognition technology.
The face of the passengers and QR code of the tickets would be captured by the e-gate at the entry of the terminal. This would be matched with the database to allow entry through gates at check-in, security and boarding. This scheme would be introduced in 2 phases and Chennai would get it in the second phase. This was confirmed by a senior official belonging to AAI or Airport Authority of India. He also spoke about how a tender would be floated in a month to install the new system at airports in places like Pune, Varanasi, Kolkata and Vijayawada. This system would also be introduced at other airports in India once when it is found free from hassles. In the first quarter of next year, Bengaluru airport would be the first in India to have this new system and in the middle of the next year, Chennai airport would also have this new system. He then spoke about the tender that would be floated and how the tender would be awarded to a company that would install this system in few more airports in India.
To use the e-gates, the passengers should get registered in Digi Yatra. An identification number would be provided to the passengers and then the passengers have to submit the number to a desk at the airport when they travel for the first time after getting registered. At this desk, the passenger photo and biometric details would be would be captured one time. It is brought out that the passengers could then walk in through the e-gates paperless for their subsequent travel. The senior official of AAI finally said that it would be voluntary and everyone cannot be forced to get registered.
By this new system, the passengers do not have to wait in the long queues. Congestion could be easily identified and the passengers would have high security as they would be verified before entering the airport terminal.
