These are other side effects of diabetes which we might not know

Not a single day in our lives passes without hearing the word ‘diabetes’. This health issue has become so common these days as many people are affected by diabetes now. The shocking piece of news is India has got the highest number of people with diabetes issue and by the year 2040 there would be 123 million people in this world affected by diabetes. It is well known that diabetes is a disorder and those having this issue have high blood sugar levels over a prolonged time period. The changes in the lifestyle have contributed greatly to the diabetes issue in us. Common symptoms of diabetes are high blood sugar levels coupled with fatigue, weight loss etc. Sometimes diabetes is associated with other unexpected issues or side effects also.

There are few other side effects of diabetes issue which we might not know

Presence of uneven skin patches:

In type- 2 diabetes issue, the person’s body becomes resistant to insulin hormone being produced and as a result of that the person would have uneven skin patches. These skin patches would be velvety, rough and dark in colour. This is one important unexpected side effect of diabetes.

Cholesterol becomes high:

Sometimes high cholesterol is present in those having diabetes issue. This high cholesterol is also one side effect. Lowering of good cholesterol levels or HDL and increase in the unhealthy fat cells occurs when our blood sugar levels are high.

Decrease in brain functions:

Gradual decline in cognitive and brain functions takes place in those who are affected with diabetes issue. This is considered as unexpected side effect. Finally issues like dementia and Alzheimer’s occurs.

Gum diseases occur:

Gum diseases occur in those people who have diabetes in them and this is also an unexpected side effect. High blood sugar levels could modify collagen tissues in the gums. By this gums become more prone to inflammation and infections. Healing of the gum diseases takes time due to diabetes issue.

Hearing loss:

We might usually associate loss in hearing to other factors like ageing, exposure to loud noises etc. Many of us do not know that diabetes could also result in this hearing loss. The studies have shown that those having diabetes in them are more prone to hearing loss than those without diabetes issue in them.

Kidney failure:

This kidney failure is regarded as a serious side effect of diabetes. The cells of kidneys are affected by the high amounts of sugar in the blood. Kidney diseases and kidney failure takes place.
